Understanding energy expenditure

To help guide patients in their journey, the first aspect is to understand the energy expenditure. This can be done by leveraging our easy to use calculator / spreadsheet to provide the energy expenditure in Kilojoules and Calories. Information you will need to input in the spreadsheet is the patient’s:

  • weight (kg),

  • height (centimetres),

  • age (years) and a

  • factor for the activity level. Note with most city-living patients the factor is 1.3 (light activity). In bold on the right-hand side of the male and female formulae are the values for the different levels of activity.

Remember to deduct the value by 1230 kj or 300 calories if the patient is more than 5 % below their peak weight.

You will need Microsoft Excel to open the downloaded spreadsheet. The formulae can be displayed by clicking on the result cell. The one on the left is in kilojoules and the cell on the right is the conversion to calories by dividing the kilojoules by 4.1. The formulae for men and women are different.
